Peering into Neural Circuits

An improved tool for all-optical electrophysiology has been developed by the Cohen group, as described in Nature Methods and the Harvard Gazette. The new method, called Optopatch, enables cross-talk-free and genetically targeted simultaneous optical perturbation and measurement of membrane voltage in neurons, and among its advantages is the ability to detect rare electrophysiological phenotypes that might be missed with more conventional methods.
