The Nocera group has developed a stand-alone device composed of terrestrially-abundant materials that captures many of the elements of the solar energy conversion process of photosynthesis.

This “artificial leaf” harnesses the wireless current from silicon with catalysts that drive splitting of water to hydrogen and oxygen under 1 sun illumination. In doing so, energy from the sun is stored in the form of a solar fuel. Work in the group is focused on the design of new catalysts, semiconducting materials, and the basic science behind the efficient coupling of solar-driven charge transport to the chemistry of solar fuels generation.
