Harvard Women In Chemistry Launches Spotlight Initiative

The Harvard Women in Chemistry (HWIC) student-led group has launched a new series spotlighting female scientists in the department. HWIC leadership is strongly invested in community building and outreach and this platform will help to highight exceptional trainees. Rebecca Sherbo awarded Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award

Rebecca Sherbo, a postdoctoral fellow in the Nocera group, has been awarded the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award at the Scientific Interface. This award funds the postdoctoral-to-faculty transition for postdocs who have completed a Ph.D. in physical sciences and then transitioned into biological sciences. Rebecca’s work is at the interface of electrochemistry and synthetic biology. She focuses on growing carbon- and nitrogen-fixing bacteria electrochemically to make food products from renewable energy and gases. A full story can be found... Researchers find first experimental evidence of elusive quantum state

“The Axion insulator is a new quantum state with truly exciting quantum properties.” said Suyang Xu, an assistant professor of chemistry at Harvard and a lead author of the report. “For a long time, researchers have been searching for materials that can realize this state. On July 28, 2021, The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) announced the formation of its seventh and newest scientific working group, which will be dedicated to supporting cancer evolution research. CCB Visiting Scholar Dr. Frank Laukien, PhD, has been selected to serve as co-chair. The newly formed working group's mission is "to advance cancer diagnostic, therapeutic, and prevention strategies by fostering a fundamental understanding of cancer evolution amongst its members and the broader cancer research community." Kevin Zhao selected as a 2021 Schmidt Science Fellow

Eric and Wendy Schmidt today announced the fourth cohort of Schmidt Science Fellows, a group of 28 early-career scientists committed to harnessing interdisciplinary science to make a positive difference in the world. Alessandra Canta wins Captain Jonathan Fay Prize

Alessandra Canta, a joint Chemistry and Astrophysics concentrator with a secondary field in MCB, has won the Captain Jonathan Fay Prize. Gregg Tucci, Director of Undergraduate Studies, recently shared this incredible news with the Department citing that this is the first time a Chemistry concentrator has won in more than thirty years.
